Without doubt the beauty of the Purbeck blue marble was at the centre of the creative process for this piece. The intensity of the colour and the intricate texture of the tiny shells spoke of the deep blue oceans and the barnacled whales that swim in the depths. Taking inspiration from Brancusi I sought to capture the essence of the mammal, its gracefulness and its heftiness in as simple a shape as possible with the mirror making reference to the water.
