carving for colour
A series of work that extends some of the ideas in Colour and Form and develops the idea that a carver can create colours and colour designs through matching the idea to the material and to carve the form to create different colours and tones.
The stone carver’s palette is limited to the nature of the stone and how they control shadow and texture to express their ideas, painters can choose to limit their palette and control their mark making to express their ideas. Ultimately the artist can choose a monochrome palette in both instances. Conversely the properties of the stone can enhance the carver’s creativity such as the material’s transparency or the way it “bruises” when carved.
