The beauty of the stone takes centre stage rather than the form carved from this piece of marble rockery stone which has incredible crystalline structure and a beautiful range of colours. Inspired by Emily Young's creative process I spent considerable time looking at the stone from all angles and turning it over and over to really understand its shape, grain and texture. Eventually I could "see" the carving within it and use the exterior stone and texture as the hair flowing downwards. As the carving progressed the face and positioning was continually adjusted to take account of the imperfections and grain of the stone.
For this piece I studied the female face at length, and in the absence of a live model collected dozens of photographs on Pinterest, with the intension of capturing a more traditional renaissance look to the facial features.
Material; salmon pink marble with brown veins
Dimensions HWD; 30cm x 20cm x 20cm
