A portrait of an old Italian man carved in beautiful pure white crystalline Carrara Statuario marble. Its a project that has taken me 2 years to complete from the initial 3 week course over in Pietrasanta, Italy in 2022 where I learned how to use the ancient pointing tool, to the spring of 2024 where I finished it off in my studio.

In 2022 I had to borrow a plaster model for the course as my model didn't make it through Italian customs (post Brexit). I used the traditional brass pointing tool to copy the plaster model into a block of marble using techniques that have been used for centuries. I called the piece Stanley due a photo (below) of the work in progress being in front of a large hoist that had the company name on it called Stanley. In the 3 weeks I was only able to complete a rough face with a number of points marked to the final carving depth and then the piece was shipped back to the UK.

In the summer of 2024 I decided to finish of Stanley and to do so I had to recreate the original plaster model back into clay from photos. Using the clay model I was then able to carve the final finished portrait by hand and eye.
