The starting stone was hard to read but very enticing with a mixture of different rocks and minerals mixed in with the intense green verdite, creating an intriguing palette to explore. The rock was incredibly hard where only diamond power tools would be sufficient to carve the form. The carving process gave only small hints as to what colours might emerge but it was only right at the end of an intense and extended polishing process did the full range of blues, yellows, browns and greens become evident. The surface resembles in parts the earth's surface viewed from space and the outline of Africa can be seen from one angle.
